A lean-to greenhouse shares one wall with your house, garage or shed. That wall stores daytime heat and gives some back at night, which is why lean-tos often stay warmer than freestanding greenhouses of the same size.
Pick the right wall

A south-facing wall is ideal, southeast or southwest is fine. Watch for roof overhangs that shade the space and for snow sliding off the roof above.
Sizes that fit small yards
- A shallow 2 to 3 foot deep shelf greenhouse for seedlings
- A walk-in 6 by 8 foot lean-to for tomatoes and winter greens
- A clear cold frame attached to the wall for low crops
Glazing choices
- Twin-wall polycarbonate: light, strong, insulates better than glass
- Glass: beautiful and long lasting, but heavy and more fragile
- Greenhouse film: cheapest, replace every few years

Small greenhouses overheat fast on sunny days. Plan a roof vent and a low vent so hot air can rise out, and add a door you can prop open. An automatic vent opener costs little and needs no electricity.

Store heat
Dark barrels of water, stone or brick along the back wall soak up heat by day and release it at night. Even a few water jugs painted black help.
What to grow
- Seedlings in early spring, weeks before outdoor planting
- Tomatoes and peppers through a longer season
- Winter salad greens and herbs
Before you build
Check local rules: many towns treat attached structures differently from sheds and may require a permit. Keep the greenhouse a little away from windows that you need for ventilation in the house.
Start small. A shelf-sized lean-to used every week does more for your garden than a big one you rarely open.
